This talk by @lunivore was totally worth getting here at 9am. Here come a bunch of notes all out of order. #jotb2019
... any time now, when the conference WiFi works ... 😢😤😠
Certainty. Humans crave it. We are more comfortable with a bad, certain outcome than an uncertain one.

But in complexity, we cannot have it.

Ok sorry people, sending that one took 40 min and 3% of battery. Maybe I’ll tweet the rest on Sunday when I get back to the US and have real WiFi
When a leader aims for certainty with command and control, they strangle the work.
“All a leader can do is clarify their intent.”
@lunivore #JOTB19
We like to form little mental commitments (feelings of certainty) early in a project, when we have very little information.
@lunivore #JOTB19
When nobody is gonna die, it isn’t a deadline. It’s a “sadline” — if you miss it, somebody will be sad.

~ @lunivore #JOTB19
Creative work is not motivated by extrinsic rewards (like a bonus or a $5 Starbucks gift card). Clarify your intent so that we can share a sense of purpose.
Distributed decision making: turn followers into leaders in their own rights.

@lunivore #JOTB19
“Good leaders are defined by the actions of their followers.” @lunivore #JOTB19
What behaviors does the situation you’ve created lead people to?
Someone asks, what is the next revolution in IT?
@lunivore says, a lot of revolutions are coming out of London. Right now we are seeing people in London using Wardley Maps and Cynefin for strategy and decisions.
Don’t be afraid to try new things. Instead, find a way to make it safe to fail.
@lunivore #JOTB19
We see failure more sharply than success.
Then we give ourselves a hard time, which holds us back from trying stuff.

Notice when something you try is working, and encourage yourself.
@lunivore #JOTB19
In Cynefin, work in complexity by probing. A probe needs coherence, meaning, a reason to think it will have a positive effect.
This can be stories, which might be expressed in behavior-driven design form.

But watch out for the sad elephant.
It turns out that if you want to get from slow, ineffective change to fast, effective change goes through faster change. Effectiveness can come later.

Continuous deployment is magic. That’s what keeps your options open in software development.

Try Deliberate Discovery, from @tastapod :
There’s stuff you don’t know, and you don’t know what you don’t know, so try the stuff you don’t know first!

Word of the day:
Apophany - that great feeling when you see the pattern and you understand ... except you’re wrong.

@lunivore #JOTB19
Wardley maps express the move from novel to utility as a component gets more common. They also express the kind of people who like to work on each project.
@lunivore #JOTB19
We love to start with the parts we know how to do, because we love a feeling of certainty.
But we need to start with the pieces that are new and hard! That gives us information.
@lunivore #JOTB19
She asked, who is familiar with the Kinevin framework?
No hands.
Now I know that’s how you pronounce Cynefin, haha!

On the positive side, this makes “symmathesy” look like an easy word
In chaos, you can’t see cause and effect. Just get out.
In complexity, you have time. You can see cause and effect - but only in retrospect. So make failure safe, and then probe.

Okay! That’s all! Thank @larsr_h for the hotspot that made these tweets possible.
