SEMINAR or SAME-INAR?
We use @ukaid to commission governance/conflict/inclusion research.
We are ‘Mission Driven’- research on policy/operational priorities where evidence is thin. Let through competition, all research is #OpenAccess.
We want people to read & use it!
1/11
We support research engagement & uptake in pursuit of real world impact (impact is where Value For Money bang is biggest) though understand that pathways to impact take time & not all research has impact. Research engagement may be digital/virtual (e.g. this tweet)… 2/11
….but often physical- seminars/workshops/conferences - which can be costly. We 💖efforts to make events as effective as possible– clear objectives, best possible 'performance' by researchers; more inclusive, insightful, & energetic discussion; reporting; real evaluation. 3/11
We 💖good time keeping & planning; effective chairing; risk taking, & innovation; application of research to such events - like recent work on +ve inclusion effects of women speaking first in plenary.
Q: Recs for research on formats, length, audience attention spans ? 4/11
We are wryly amused by conference trends. 🤨
Why are vast armchairs now such a Panel thing?
What happened to tables to sit behind?
Do people ever refer back to their photos of PPT slides?
Why did podium banners go from artisan to plastic? Ban them? Conference bags? 5/11
... If all-male panel = 'Manel' should we call out other non-inclusive or ineffective panels? Ideas?
#Palenel - all-white panel when race & ethnicity are pertinent to subject.
#PallMall - UK panel excluding the >87% of UK population that is comprehensive educated...
6/11
...#Flannel - bland, congratulatory, and skirting the sensitive topic that the audience really wants to hear debated .
7/11
But we have some sympathy with panel organisers. A finely constructed, perfectly balanced panel of 4 can be destroyed by late dropouts. Or poor guest chairing. 8/11
Q: How can we make audiences work harder and stay focused?
What is the protocol if your neighbour’s typing means you can’t hear the speaker? Is their note taking/live tweeting/online shopping more important than your hearing?... 9/11
💡At recent DFID event we started with mass pledge on workshop behaviour ”i swear to listen more than speak; never say 'a point then a question'(that is really 2nd lengthy point); to always use mic as it is for listeners’ benefit, not speaker’s preference” ??Worth a try?
10/11
...and we actively encourage knitting:
(some of most the inspiring development researchers we work with are live-knitters) (& you can't wear a Tweet).

Thoughts on avoiding Same-inars & getting very best out of research events?
@fp2p ?
