When I was in middle school I wanted to be an astronaut, but was told women couldn’t be astronauts. #SallyRide was older than me but she didn’t let that stop her.

It stopped me.

In HS I was the top student in every #math class I took til precalc. Didn't it was ok to have to work at being good at math. No adult recognized my potential and pushed me. I lost interest in spite of my math SAT score being higher than my verbal.

In both high school and college, I tried physics, but felt stupid so I didn’t work hard to gain understanding of the #science. I stopped trying. I felt a flash of my old math excitement when I took a statistics class, but I already believed it wasn’t a path for me.

I was less mature emotionally than I was intellectually which is a hard place to be when you need to fight societal stereotypes. It was expected I go to college but I was not expected to focus on a career. My job was to serve me until a man could take care of me. #Ugh

After college, I began to develop the confidence that would have served me well ten years earlier. But I believed it was too late to alter the path I was on. I had a long, successful career in sales but always felt I’d missed something.

When I stumbled into writing novels with #STEM peer role models for girls, I found a creative side I didn’t know existed and—amazingly—my writing provided me a place to return to my early #STEM interests.
