As most of you on here probably know, I’m focused on how race intersects with the #2020 election. Today I’m out with a story on @SenWarren catching fire with black women voters. Read it here:
apnews.com/7db90b8ea82849…
Like many Democrats, by no means are black women committed to any one candidate this early in the primary season. But they are paying attention and Warren has gotten on folks’ radar. (I hear y’all’s 2020 group chats have been 🔥)
As a 69-year-old white woman from Oklahoma and former Harvard professor running in the most diverse field ever, I wondered what this was about. But voters I spoke to said repeatedly Warren’s been able to connect through stories that resonate and intersectional policy.
Warren’s signature phrase on the campaign — “I have a plan for that” — is basically every black woman’s motto. Warren had a breakout moment last month at #ShethePeople but has also visited HBCUs and published op-eds in @Essence and @Blavity.
What’s interesting about Warren’s rise among black women is that it is her being a white woman that allows her to discuss issues of race in a way that comes across as refreshing. Black candidates discussing similar issues can be seen as pandering or locked into identity politics.
Anyway I get into all of this in the article, so please read and share your thoughts. Enjoy your Saturday!
