This should not need saying but apparently it does. Throwing a milkshake at someone is a non-violent act.
It is not the same, nor is it a prelude to, people throwing acid or bricks at someone. And it is most certainly not the same as murdering an MP, a disgraceful comparison which people should not be making.
The non-violent mockery of politicians, and especially the far and hard right, has a long and honourable history in this country. This falls within that.

Ideally be sympathetic and specific, not snide or aggressive.

I think it's important to have an uncompromising view on assertible rights against the police, prisons, etc.--the determination should not be made with regard to the severity of the acts of which they are accused, or anything similar.
Most people divide crimes into those for which people shouldn't be abused (maybe drug crimes, white collar offenses, etc), and ones where they think people should be (terrorism, murder, sexual assault, armed robbery, treason, etc).
It often seems to me that the difference between most leftists and the avg. views on prisons is that the leftist list of crimes for which people shouldn't be abused is slightly larger (more wiling to excuse property crimes, crimes against state, and sometimes murder)

You know that line about judging people by their actions rather than their words? What about people whose only non-trivial output is words? (assume their actions are boringly uncontroversial, like say living basic middle class life funded by job at paper factory)

Here’s a way.
Judge them by topics rather than methods of thought. The thinker’s equivalent of action is choice of topic. Almost always, all the real risk is there (but CRUCIALLY may not be borne by the thinker). Methodology (analytical, empirical, logical, narrative, metaphoric) is secondary
There is a particular kind of motte and bailey maneuver where criticism of the risky part (topic/content) is redirected to an innocent-faced defense of the safe part (method). *Especially when the risk of any erroneous conclusions on the topic is borne by others.*
