I think:

* this has the ring of truth to me with regards to the vast majority of shops
* (I would broaden observation from deploys into internal tools generally)
* Stripe’s tooling on this specific issue is pretty good and has come a long way in last 2 years.

We have a lot of services of varying blast radii. I remember once having to coordinate deploys of middle-of-list services with other engineers; we now have a web interface which mostly obsoleted that.

90% less minutes per deploy (for me).
That said: if you’re at a company with 40+ engineers and, let’s pick a small minimum bound, 5% of your engineers aren’t full-time dedicated to internal tooling, that seems to be the biggest free lunch in the history of free lunches.
