The worst part about tracing may be that you have to instrument *everything* to get any benefit. No partial credit.

Unless you're using honeycomb. You get all the powerful event debuggery, plus incrementally more detailed tracing as you instrument more services.
This is nice, because who on earth has the time to do a clean pass through your entire code base???

The realistic strategy is to adopt an instrumentation-first approach to understanding and resolving pain points. If it hurts, instrument it til you understand it. Rinse, repeat.
Six to nine months later, you'll have a pretty well illuminated system. That's when it's time to declare it's time to pay down some tech debt and instrument the remaining cobwebby corners.

Nobody is gonna fight you then; it will have amply proved its value.
