Stewart cannot be Tory leader, and therefore prime minister, because he is sane and principled. It really is as simple as that. We are in a bizzaro world of virtue.
If we had any sense, we would recognise this fact and work outward, reverse engineering our political culture until we could fix what has so clearly gone terribly wrong. But we will not
We are so fucked as a country. A few thousand of the most batshit insane of us are about to just unilaterally pick the prime minister. It's basically a hostage situation.
Quite apart from the politics, Boris Johnson becoming prime minister would send such a terrible message about what we value as a country.
He believes in nothing. He has no principles. His every action is dictated by self-interest. He is a base hypocrite. And it'll have worked for him.

Every drug story about a politician is a reminder of how racist and class-ridden this policy is. If you're middle class and white, it's a naughty joke you can brush aside. If you're not, it'll see you thrown in jail and destroy your career prospects.
Every year that passes, countless lives are destroyed by this policy. Pointlessly destroyed. And we let it happen, even though almost everyone you talk to in the political class agrees it is ineffective and wrong.
But there's no urgency to change it, because, for most people in the political class, it'll fall into the laugh-and-shrug world, rather than the life-destroying world.

Corbyn's fumbling it. Same strategic error as May: going far enough to alienate some people without going far enough to attract others.
I basically get the argument of negotiating a new deal and putting that to the country. But it has serious problems - ie indicates he will be campaigning for Brexit, because it would be his deal.
And presentationally none of it is clear. It's all suspicious and sneaky and reluctant. He really is quite unutterably useless.

So we've got a general election in #Spain today. Socialist PM Pedro Sánchez is the frontrunner, although it's not certain that he will be able to put up a ruling majority. Here's a thread with a few thoughts on #28A:

d) The conservative PP faces an assault on the right not seen since the UCD collapsed in the 80s

The campaign has been heavily polarized between left and right.

The right (PP + Ciudadanos + Vox) has focused on #Catalonia, hammering Sánchez's credibility and accusing him of being ready to cut the country into pieces for the sake of remaining in office.

To understand why, I need to outline 2 important mechanisms that most people, politicians and commentators seem to ignore, dismiss or simply don't get. They have different and somewhat opposite consequences, but are both decisive in the current & foreseeable predicaments.

1st and foremost: the biggest constraint that applies to political decision-making comes from the past decisions & policies.
It is a massive constraint.
Cameron COULD NOT convincingly campaign for #Remain, because his own policies CREATED the discontent channelled by #Leave.

The ERG hates the backstop. They want a unilateral exit clause - but the more they talk about that, the more the EU and Irish are going to cling to the need for a backstop that guarantees no return to a hard border. /2

The brave new PM (Raab, Boris, DD or whoever) rides into Brussels with an ultimatum: it's the deal-minus-backstop, or No deal.
