As incredible as Hadestown is, the most poetically, devastatingly sad element of the show requires extrinsic knowledge of the show’s history, specifically the fact that “Why We Build The Wall” was written long before Trump’s presidential run — not in response to it.
Each time I listen to this, the earlier version, I’m taken aback at the thought that the people who initially heard the song heard it without thinking about Donald J. Trump. open.spotify.com/track/1oOKc8oF…
When you sit in the @hadestown audience on Broadway now, watching @pagepatrick sing the song, everyone is in a state of disbelief: It’s impossible not to ponder the president and his campaign pledge. open.spotify.com/track/5udqEUjd…
But, if you stop and think about it, it all comes together, in a debilitating way, bc the truth is ... it’s an old tale.

“‘Cause here’s the thing, to know how it ends, and still to begin to sing it again, as if it might turn out this time ...”
It’s gut-wrenching to think through. @anaismitchell and @rachelchavkin are artists of the highest caliber, and I can’t believe how strongly every second of their production stays in my mind and heart. Thank you for destroying me .. again and again.
