The idea of a genteel United States that is best served by the brand of rectitude Mueller is exhibiting is an invention of a privileged whiteness, untouched by the more nefarious and unpleasant aspects of this country’s history. It’s the stuff of myths and glorified Americana.
Perhaps that is one reason why Mueller’s restraint, and that of Democratic leadership, is so painful for me to behold. Facing an opponent like Trump, they don’t look dignified as they adhere to tradition. There is nothing all that dignified about a failure of accountability.
