This advance is due to 1) maturation of UX in the conversational field 2/
2) advancement in machine learning, and filling in of the labeled training data we didn’t (mostly still don’t) have for communication 3/
3) collective learnings about the best handoff interfaces between bots and humans 4/
and 4) the identification of valuable use cases where companies have decided it’s worth accepting human manual cost to create that labeled data, and automating over time 5/
Amazon Alexa is now 5 years old, and the Facebook Messenger platform is 3. My daughter (18 months) tried to say “Alexa” this morning. She knows about 20 words. 6/
We used to talk about “digital natives” and “social natives” — soon I think we’ll talk about “AI natives” 7/
Will be curious to see how many at-scale, persistent investments like Google Duplex we’ll see in both getting consumers comfortable with bots and creating the datasets we need nytimes.com/2019/05/22/tec… 8/
It’s easy to be discouraged by the incompleteness, fragility, weirdness of new technologies when we haven’t been working on them for very long. 9/
I don’t think many people understood the value of task automation and workflow *tied* to conversation until relatively recently. We’re still in inning 1 of n? Early discovery. 10/
But there are enough glimmers of greatness — from the obvious but hard — a bot that converts a website visitor into a real customer lead (hello @Drift) to the totally weird — digital characters that become our friends (hello @Lilmiquela) that I’m watching this still 11/
