Lib Dem leadership hustings in...Islington. Very different vibe from the rallies I’ve been used to, of late. 
.@joswinson tells me “there should be no limit to our ambition. Politics is realigning on a liberal/nationalist axis.” When I ask if she thinks she could be prime minister “Yes. I would love to be.”
Applause when chair @SalBrinton thanks everyone for beating @jeremycorbyn “in his own backyard.” Also tells everyone the # for tonight is #LibDemSurge. They are jubilant.
It is so weird for me (who became a journalist in 2012) to see the Lib Dems...happy
Swinson vs Davey run off essentially is Swinson saying LibDems need to be new liberal movement/counterweight to Farage and the Brexit Party. Macron to their le Pen. Davey more policy focussed about green issues and climate change. Suspect Swinson’s will be more compelling.
Swinson says no deal cannot be on the referendum ballot paper, saying it’s not deliverable. Suspect the only way she gets the PV she wants is if it is. That’s the conundrum remainers will have to ponder. The dream of reversing Brexit vs the risk of their nightmare.
Ed Davey: “I was extremely cautious when Change UK came on the scene; and I was cautious because I knew some of them.”
For what it’s worth it felt Swinson had the more compelling message but Davy came across better in the room and worked the crowd. Most LibDems seem to think Swinson the favourite but these hustings could really make the difference, outcome far from certain.
People of Islington, in fact people in most urban places, be prepared to see variants of this posted through your door very soon.
