In Chapter 5, he argues that of the five million manufacturing jobs lost after 2000, 80 percent were lost owed to automation; in Michigan half of them went on disability, "entering a new underclass of government dependents who have been left behind."
"This is a good indicator of what will occur when truck drivers lose their jobs."

"Truck drivers don't see it coming. ... Let me assure you, it's coming."
Companies, he writes, can eliminate the jobs of retail and fast-food workers "with minimal violence and fuss. Truck drivers will be different."
I suspect he's right.

"Many are ex-military ... they will be proud and desperate. What might happen when the 350,000 American truckers who bought or leased their own trucks are unemployed and angry?"
"All it takes is one out of 350,000 to lead the others."

Chapter 16: The Freedom Dividend.
He acknowledges that at this point, I must be thinking, "Wow, this guy's view of the future is bleak." A friend who read it said, "You should change the title to 'We're Fucked.'"

I was thinking just that. I was almost too depressed to keep reading, actually.
But I'm a professional. I was given this book to review. I can't stop now.

In addition to the problem of technological job loss, American society is in no position to fix its problems because--and here he offers a bullet-point list of reasons for despair--
among them, we're getting older, we have no savings, we're all on drugs, we're depressed, we're in debt, we're uneducated, our economy is consolidating around a handful of oligarchical firms, and we neither trust each other nor our institutions.

In Obama's last two years the GDP growth rate fell by almost 40 percent from 2015 to 2016. Trump inherited an economy that was going the wrong way, and he turned it around.

Many economic and automation experts predict that "boom towns" of today, like Las Vegas, in 10 years could face upwards of 65% of jobs being automated out of existence, becoming "the next Detroit."
