Today my friend and I sit on a bench in a public park. We talk and laugh, just two hairy-legged lesbians minding our business in the soft spring breeze. Suddenly, a man appears...
He’s tall and visibly inebriated, a commonplace encounter. My friend and I pay him no mind. He climbs a nearby statue and yells, “Cunt!” several times at the top of his lungs. Also commonplace. He then circles the park and spits at us. Not so common...
My friend says if this man returns, she will confront him. I ask her, “You wanna go batshit?” She says resolutely, “Yes.” We take deep breaths for a moment and then laugh, fully confident in the other’s resolve. She would fight for me, and I for her. And we both know it.
Long story short, there was no fight. The man did not return, probably because we refused for so long to give him any of our energy. But really, what a precious thing this energy is! This wellspring of peace and courage women share in the face of adversity.
My heart swells for fellow lesbians who’ve been spit on, beaten, you name it, simply for being who we are. Only WE know the power of our bonds. It’s times like these that remind me why we do what we do. Why we love fiercely and freely. Why we are unapologetically ourselves. ⚢
