If Chernobyl happened today, this is what it would've looked like. Citizens in Kiselyovsk, Eastern Siberia, dismayed at the ecological disaster in their area due to coal mining (black snow, smog, huge rates of lung cancer) are asking the PM of Canada (!) Justin Trudeau for asylum
Before you ask, the reason they've chosen Canada is because "it is much like our Siberia"... But also probably because it's full of very nice people, I'd like to think.
Western Siberia, of course... My bad.

OK, time for the second part of my Russian cultural "likbez" (a Soviet term which means "liquidation of illiteracy"... everything in the USSR was a liquidation of something... we lived in a cheerful country): the different terms in the Russian language for degrees of drunkenness.
This by no means exhaustive list will be done in the ascending order: from light inebriation to progressively mote piss-yourself drunk. As before, linguistic and cultural analysis will be provided fro each term. Be warned that it's but a fraction of our drink-related vocabulary.
Level 1: "Podshofe". This term is formed by blending the Russian "pod" (under) with the French "chauffe" (warm), literally "under some heat." It's a very aristocratic term which asserts that one's being a little inebriated hasn't robbed him of his dignity and cultural pretensions

Since we are talking linguistic peculiarities and drunkenness, it seems only appropriate to point out that the Russian language has A LOT of words for getting drunk (you are shocked, aren't you? Admit it, you are shocked), all of them relying different subtleties of the condition
OK, let's see how many I can conjure up in my memory without doing any Google searches...
I will start, of course, with "bukhat", which means "to drink purposefully and resolutely with the express goal of getting drunk", an act also known as "the history of Russia."
The opposite of "bukhat" is "prinyat", which translates directly as "to take" (as in "to take medicine"). It means "to have a quick drink to get just a bit tipsy, giving one the resolve needed to face the daily torture of Russian life or quell the throbbing of the Russian soul."

To revive my old hashtag, #TodaysRussianProverb, "Once you've grabbed the tug rope, don't say you ain't strong enough"... This is to say that I will indeed review tonight's Episode 5 of #ChernobylHBO with another dose of Soviet-era trivia and whatever else gets drudged up.
Let's start by saying that over the last week the state media and "patriotic" commentariat have finally gotten into gear with critical takes, calling it everything from a vicious Western attack on the memories of Soviet heroism to a mindless collection of fables and stereotypes..
The finale will probably only intensify this rhetoric, since here the Soviet bureaucracy and systemic failures really come into focus. I am not an expert on nuclear power, but I can offer my view on the "mindless stereotypes" angle. Once again, my area is authenticity of details.

1. Chernobyl released at least 100 times more radiation than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

48 hrs after the disaster a huge fallout cloud, 10 miles wide, began drifting towards Moscow. The Soviet air force were sent up to chase it.
Kate Brown's Manual For Survival, says they flew after the "inky black billows of radioactive waste" and shot at it with silver iodide.
This is known as "cloud seeding" and the effect is to make the targeted clouds rain. The Soviet Air Force were skilled at manipulating the weather in this way, having began studying "cloud physics" during the war.
