The Mexican military has agreed to send 6,000 soldiers to their border with Guatemala to halt the migrant flow.

While this sounds promising, the Mexican military will face major challenges:
- Guatemala's corrupt institutions
- Powerful smugglers
- Jungles

Guatemala's leadership, border patrol, and police are neck-deep in the smuggling industry, as CIS analyst @BensmanTodd has witnessed first-hand.

The Mexican military should expect very little help from Guatemala, rendering this effort far less effective.

Even as Mexico sends troops to its Guatemalan border, some smugglers have been relying on the coastal smuggling route. Many makeshift camps have popped up along Guatemala's coast to avoid the jungles and Mexican authorities.
In 2007, @BensmanTodd interviewed Guatemala's Director of Migration, Santos cuc Morales.

When Bensman asked him if he could borrow officers for a patrol, Morales said he couldn't--because his officers had been bought by cartels and stopped taking orders.
