Should we have 75 states in India instead of 29?

E.g. TN could be Kongu Nadu, Chozha Nadu, Pandya-nadu, Tondaimandalam

Having more states will

a. Strengthen Indian union
b. Weaken lingual nationalisms
c. As a result of b, increase inter-state mobility
Let's take Uttar Pradesh

In my view this state with 200 MM people is a mess right now...It's just way too large. I repeat...too large

We can have at least 6 states in UP - 10 culturally meaningful, homogeneous states
Let me take a stab -

Braj
Avadh
Bundelkhand
Rohilkhand
Poorvanchal
Bagelkhand

Even among these six, Avadh and Poorvanchal are too big. They can be split further

"South Asia" is an egregious term esp when discussing history

When people use "Greco-Roman" to refer to classical civilization, they don't just mean modern Italy and Greece

But the whole Greco-Roman world which spanned the Meditteranean, N Africa, and parts of Central Europe
Hadrian's Wall is a part of Roman history. It represents Roman civ.

Not British history. Not Celtic history. Leave alone Anglo Saxon history as they hadn't even landed in UK at the time the Wall was built
Similarly the civilization of Sri Lanka is Indic, as it originated in the eastern parts of the subcontinent from where the earliest Indo-Aryan migrations to Ceylon happened

It is more Indian than say the civilization represented by Abul Fazal or Ahmad Sirhindi

Much of the wisdom one finds in courses on "leadership", "strategy", "management" is predicated on the belief that humans are rational and reasonable

There is v little discussion of evil. Schadenfraude

It is only Religion that pays attention to studying Evil and unreason
In other words, the conventional wisdom of our civilization is based on the Enlightenment notion that people engage in "bad" things driven by rational self interest

And that through negotiation / compromise, we *can* get along with anyone
Religion in contrast accepts the existence of evil. Much of its literature concerns the triumph of good over evil

Ofc the understanding of evil will differ across cultures

But the underlying commonality is that Evil is real. It can't be sidestepped. And it cannot be *explained*

Manchester, the venue of today's game, can be regarded as the birthplace of modernity in one sense

The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution

Today its pop is barely 3 MM - a medium sized town

But in the year 1900, Manchester at 1.4MM was the 9th largest city in the world!
In 1764, the "Spinning Jenny" was invented in Lancashire, and revolutionized the production of cloth

Here's an image of some of the early cotton mills set up in Manchester (this is from 1820)

Seems unremarkable - but these must have seemed like imposing structures 200 yrs ago
One reason for Manchester's rise was that it was v well connected with Liverpool, a port, through a manmade navigation course - "Mersey and Irwell Navigation" in mid 18th cen, enabling import of raw cotton on a large scale

Though we all want our kids to be safe, the moment someone mentions Sex Education, we shrink into a ball.

Conventional sex education limits itself to half baked scientific knowledge of anatomy, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
This is still a Victorian model where ultimate aim is to drive people away from notion of sex by making it as uninteresting and scary as possible.

But imparting of real knowledge, information about pleasure, eroticism etc to adolescents brings you in conflict with law.
And the biggest parental fear - if they know about all this, they WILL start using this knowledge.!

Fair enough.

So most kids end up learning about sex from friends and sex videos aka pornography.

There is almost nothing to stop them from their curiosity.

Breaking: Large terrorist attack in #India. More than 40 Indian Reserve Police Force personnel were killed and many others injured when Pakistani backed terrorists targeted a convoy with a car bomb at Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir's today, ndtv.com/india-news/15-…
Reports suggested that the vehicle used by the terrorists was a Mahindra Scorpio carrying more than 350 kg of explosives in what is the worst attack ever on security personnel in the state.
Sources said that terrorists triggered the car bomb while 78 vehicles with over 2,500 reserve police men were on the Srinagar-Jammu highway. The stretch on which the incident occurred had been sanitized in the morning & authorities called it a serious breach of security.
