There has been a lot of discussion about when #TheNextRecession is coming, given that we are in midst of the longest expansion in modern history. (1/7)
As part of this discussion, some economists have tried to get ahead of this by preparing the country to better handle the next recession (see the hashtags #RecessionReady & #TheNextRecession). (2/7)
While we recovered from the Great Recession, we could have done a much better job of providing a soft landing by strengthening automatic stabilizers. (3/7)
What are automatic stabilizers you say?

Glad you asked.

Along with my @CAPeconomy colleagues @saraestep3 & @mikemadowitz, we have created this primer. (4/7) americanprogress.org/issues/economy…
@CAPeconomy @saraestep3 @mikemadowitz This primer answers 3 Qs: What are auto stabilizers? Why they are crucial for combating recessions? How can we make them better?
@CAPeconomy @saraestep3 @mikemadowitz We outline the principals that should underlie these proposals;

1) increased and extended benefits (when necessary) for ALL demographic groups
2) incorporating appropriate triggers
3) substantial relief to states
4) strengthening MOE provisions. (6/7)
@CAPeconomy @saraestep3 @mikemadowitz Our hope is that policymakers can take steps to strengthen existing auto stabilizers and create new ones to ensure a softer landing during future recessions. (7/7)
