Some architectural wonders from yesterday’s segment of of #BBRTA2019: first the Guardian Building in Detroit, an astonishing 1928ish mashup of Art Deco & Prairie Style
And then a stop in Beverly Shores Indiana, home of several surviving Homes of the Future from the 1933 Chicago ‘Century of Progress’ World’s Fair. Little Pink Houses, indeed.
This is the Florida Tropical House by Robert L Weed, sponsored by the State of Florida to promote Florida life. Nearby is the Rostone house designed by Purdue U architect Walter Scholer & made of a composite material called Rostone
The octagonal Glass House, by seminal Chicago modernists Keck & Keck, made of steel and glass and currently under renovation. Featured an airplane hangar garage !
The Armco-Ferro house, sponsored Armco Steel of Cleveland. Made of steel, glass, aluminum & porcelain
On the rustic side, the Cypress House, made of ‘The Wood Eternal’
When the Fair was over, all of these houses were floated by barge down Lake Michigan to Beverly Shores where they live today. They are privately owned, but open to the public 1 day every year
