Since my React thread went so well, here’s one filled with things I’ve learned about Code Review, after reviewing pull requests for the last few years.

It’s all about the communication. If you work on a software team, being explicit can really help.

I’ve found that the code isn’t necessarily as important as its intent. Making the intent clear helps the team understand and potentially improve the overall product.
Here’s an example: you want to ignore a lint rule.

Not ideal:
// eslint-disable-line

Ideal:
// eslint-disable-line because (your reasons here)

I love that // comments continue to be ignored through the end of the line so you have all the room to talk to your team. 💞

Why React? A thread by the request of my friend @hackSultan.

All apps require user interaction. On the web, responding (reacting?) to user events was often slow and inconvenient.

It was also hard to manage/track the state of a given user interface.

Fundamentally, this is the problem React solves.
DOM updates without React:

- expensive
- error-prone
- hard to keep track of

DOM updates with React:

- managed complexity
- more predictable
- explicitly managed

@mlfrg @zeithq The problem that I have with running a container in the cloud is that it's harder to manage: your container dies (maybe insufficient resources?), your whole system dies. Of course, you could have microservice containers, but they're still harder to scale than λ IMO.
@mlfrg @zeithq Since λ are just functions, they:

- boot up
- run to completion
- shut down

I consider this _really_ predictable with very low screwup potential in contrast to:

- deploy
- start
- ...anything can happen

The above holds state (over time) that could be corrupted, etc.

Random ideas around writing an FSM library, with examples from, and motivations behind hfsm.dev, a header-only library created using #cpp template #metaprogramming with #gamedev, #embedded and #robotics in mind.
*Reuse vs reimplement*

State machines can be deceptively complex, and, unless a trivial one is needed, a reusable framework is highly recommended.

Rolling out one's own for special needs is ok.

Otherwise - pick from a variety of existing solutions from #boost, on #github, etc.
*Static vs dynamic structure*

The first important decision is whether the structure of FSM could be built/changed at runtime.

The implementation of a dynamic FSM relies on heap-allocated memory, resizable containers and pointers, all of which come at a steep perf price.

On the subject of GitHub work for hiring: thinking about it as strictly positive or uselessly noisy probably means you have an overly simplistic model for evaluating candidates.

I'll share a model that's worked for me in the past.
Before you even write the job description, define the 3-7 traits you need to hire against. These can be as fuzzy as "gets shit done" or as specific as "5+ years marketing SaaS to $100k+ accounts" or "is effective at resolving incidents while on-call."
You need to be able to rate people on this. Binary is fine ("yes they can get shit done"). 3-4 levels is good (bad / good / total superstar).

Don't go overboard with granularity: you need to fit this all in your head for a couple candidates at a time when you compare them.
