Let this sink in: The RSF, which is a rebranding of the Janjaweed militias that committed war crimes in Darfur, have effectively occupied Sudan's capital. Its head, Hemedti, is a close ally of Saudi Arabia and the UAE. A Saudi/UAE ally has occupied Sudan's capital.
Here's the kicker: The RSF (which I remind is a rebranding of the militias that committed genocide in Darfur) have received support from... the EU. For helping manage refugee flow. clingendael.org/pub/2018/multi…
What is the EU doing now about Sudan, a key country of 40+ million people that has risen for dignity and democracy, only to face virtual occupation by a brutal militia its policies have for years supported? Anything other than fake concern?

Having polite discussions that cover up ugly injustices is more obscene and offensive than any combination of four-letter words.
When four-letter words serve to uncover injustice and place it front and center in front of those who would rather ignore it, then these four-letter words stop being obscene. They become deeply moral.

Full disclosure: As a Palestinian, this opinion piece has actually changed my mind. It has convinced me that no peace is possible with the current Israeli ruling elite. We are in a deeply existential battle not only for our human rights but for our very identity.
From my many conversations and interactions with Israelis I can now see that there are two Israels. One is an Israel that is a safe haven and cultural homeland for the Jewish people. Another is an Israel which is a sophisticated, well-oiled machine of institutional repression.
Peace is only possible with the first Israel. No peace is possible with the second Israel. For peace, the second one has to be uprooted and dismantled, something that neither Israel's ruling elites nor the majority of its electorate will choose.

Persecution creates identity. The more a group is targeted for who they are, the more *aware* they are of who they are, and of the institutional racism against them. The response is almost always to grab on to their identity even more.
I am not aware of any modern group identity that was wiped out through persecution. What melts one's group identity is when it doesn't matter any more, when it becomes painless, colorless, even boring. Not when it's a screaming, burning wound in the center of your soul.
And those two tweets are my response to those morons and racists who think that, if they just repress and crush Palestinians a little bit more, they can get them to give up on their being Palestinian. Not only are you racists, you're also idiots.

Since Bashir’s ousting in April, this is one of the most “practically” sensible & insightful analysis from anyone, on the current crisis in #Sudan.
All individuals & organisations (both those engaged from inside #Sudan, & those engaged from outside) would do well, & be wise,...
...to heed its content; & the warning from @_hudsonc. The consequences of NOT doing so, have already been seen via a “smaller”, but bloody, “taster” back on the 3rd June. The upcoming “main event” on the 30th June, will be even more bloody; if it is not addressed NOW in advance.
Very desperate people always do very desperate, & usually very stupid, things - & the TMC & RSF are NOW “very desperate” people.

With the internet cut in Sudan and the scramble to try and find out what's happening in Khartoum, we may have missed something very serious in Darfur.

Right now, it's hard to confirm what happened the scale. A few days ago, images and videos began circling of burning villages.
Today, there are reports of a very high death toll but I don't know how to confirm it at the moment.
The UN said in May that it's camps in Darfur were looted. This week, Antonio Guterres acknowledged this an internal letter to Sudan staff - not sure if this has happened again.

⭕Imagine your contry was ruled by a military man(#Albashir) that came via coup for 30 years.
⭕Drove your economy into the ground and put almost your entire ppl in poverty.
⭕Whilst doing so this ruler violently cracks down on any whiff of opposition
⭕Systematically dismantles your constitution and institutions
⭕Replaces any decent govt figureheads with gutless yes men
⭕Starts a genocide/ethnic cleansing in an entire state of your country #darfur
⭕to carry out said genocide this military man decides to employ a militia(#janjaweed) of Chadian origins(who were originally bandits, and donkey/camel thieves) lead by a nomadic man (#hemidty) and arms them to the teeth and directs them at their target.

Over the last week, protests have erupted across #Sudan, with NISS intelligence service stations being burnt and reports of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) defending protestors in some locations. This is a developing thread for remotely monitoring the situation, h/t @trevorsnapp.
In Atbara, for example, protesters have set fire to the headquarters of ruling the National Congress Party, led by President Omar al-Bashir. There's plenty of visual evidence of the unrest, such as this video. Geolocation: 17.694190, 34.001319 (google.com/maps/place/17%…).
The NCP headquarters suffered heavy damage from the protests on 19 Dec 2018, as this photo shows (h/t @wasilalitaha). Second image shows the building in a better state, via their Facebook page.
