The Conservative leadership candidate and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has warned Tory members not to choose the candidate where there’s no trust. Latest with @bbclaurak #bbcnewssix now
Mr Hunt told @bbclaurak ‘it’s about the personality of the Prime Minister. If you choose someone where there’s no trust there’s going to be no negotiation, no deal, quite possibly a General Election which could mean we have no Brexit.’
He went on to say ‘I am trustworthy and I do believe I can be trusted to deliver this deal. We’ve had a lot of discussion about how, but we need to have more of a discussion about who. There is a deal to be done, we just have to make sure we send the right person to get it’.
Jeremy Hunt went on to say he would make the decision about whether to leave the EU without a deal before the October 31st deadline. Earlier Boris Johnson had called for Mr Hunt to commit to leaving the EU by October 31st if no deal is agreed.
On social care he talked about a policy of individual savings plans and a cap on costs. He said councils needed more money but that he believes it’s also about personal responsibility. ‘I think we should be a country where people save for their social care costs.’
He said it should be automatic for people to save but that they could opt out of it. Asked if he’d put a cap on social care costs he said ‘I’d do a deal, if you’re prepared to save responsibly during your life, then we will cap those costs.’
On abortion he said he would vote with his conscience if an MP put forward legislation to cut the time limit on abortion. Mr Hunt has previously said he was in favour of reducing the legal time limit from 24 weeks to 12.
