The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said the Speaker's intervention yesterday showed that John Bercow was "ensuring parliament is taken seriously, that parliament upholds its position as having a right to hold government to account."
He blamed the delay to Brexit on the "sheer incompetence" of the government.
Mr Corbyn said he had spoken to Conservative and Labour MPs about the so-called Norway Plus option for Brexit. "What i am trying to do is reach out across the House for an alternative," he said.
"What they were asking for was support for the Norway Plus deal, as they call it, which was an interesting idea. I haven't given it my complete support for that. It is an interesting idea. It wasn't that far from what we are saying."
Asked about another referendum, he said: "The issue has to be put to the people after parliament has made some kind of decision. That was the view of my party conference. What we are doing is proposing our views, which I hope will get a majority in parliament...."
"...there could be a public vote after that, but it has to be on a range of options, it cannot just be on Theresa May's deal or Remain. There has to be some choice for the people."
"If the government can't get a majority for its way on Monday, then I think that is the time to challenge this government. That is the time to step aside and let the people decide on a people's vote -- and it's called a general election."
