What's striking here is the framing of the migrants themselves as having zero agency whatsoever: as if they didn't actually make a decision to take on the journey because their own assessment of the danger they faced at home.
One of the members of congress today spoke about talking to twelve Cuban women in a CBP facility. Does Pence think they were just duped by traffickers, or maybe they were leaving Cuba for a good reason?
Which is not say that traffickers aren't predatory; they are. But people are undertaking this insanely treacherous journey for a reason.
