I know we're only 3 years into the UK as a negotiator but it is quite staggering how badly we're doing when most MPs in our governing party think you get a good deal by threatening to leave and the media hardly challenge them
This exchange earlier in the week of Liam Fox being challenged as to why the UK wasn't just giving the EU an FTA to sign is quite revealing - that MPs can think that's how negotiations work. Fox thankfully has learnt a few things...

So essentially from this thread the pitch of the Alternative Arrangements Commission is to admit that technology cannot in fact prevent cross-border trade checks, but there are ways to minimise these especially if there is SPS and regulatory alignment
Those who have been advocating the UK remaining in the EEA because they did the research and realised border checks were mostly abolished because of the single market will be feeling to an extent vindicated. But of course EEA is not allowed to be the answer
As I've said before, the AAC is half a step forward in some Brexiteers understanding of what makes a border, and actually undermines those who say technology is the answer. But the political contortions to get even that far make it mostly useless in offering solutions

The answer, outside the rarefied world of Spectator readers, is almost certainly no. I speak from the experience of working on UK-EU-US relations for three years when we faced huge public opposition. And that was under a President popular in the UK.
For three years since 2016 veterans of TTIP talks have been warning Brexit politicians that a UK-US trade deal would be hugely unpopular and damaging to relations. The last thing the UK needs after a divisive Brexit, an even more divisive trade deal. Dismissed as remainer talk...
Stories like the below are just going to keep coming, whether on food, NHS, regulations, or whateer. The EU or US are not going to be nice to the UK because we say it's in their interests. Neither will show the slightest sentiment. Are we going to learn?

Very bad news, credit to those supporting the Ambassador but now an intensification of one Brexit battle, to save an impartial civil service
Is Prime Minister Johnson going to support his staff? So many questions arise

This won't stop Johnson becoming PM, but adds to the feeling that an unproven (at best) leader facing an unprecedented challenge is not doing much to build confidence that he has the wherewithal to succeed

Take this for example, ditch #EU regulation and replace it in order to reach a trade deal with the US. They will have us for breakfast, forcing further deregulation and acceptance of harmful agri-products. Industry don’t necessarily want it and in services they will squeeze us./2

1. A thread on #trade and aid.

One of the first tangible benefits of #Brexit I've seen is the emerging reform of @DFID_UK where it is becoming more of an arm of trade policy than a state owned humanitarian NGO. I would like that to go much further and rethink trade.
2. I do not think we should be wasting too much effort on free trade deals largely because they are of questionable value and encourage inefficient value chains. Any work on tariffs should really be reserved for multilateral activity.
3. Instead we need DfID as the spearhead of our trade policy. There is no reason why we cannot pursue humanitarian goals and enhance our trade while we are at it. For a start we can do a lot with medicines and pharmacy products.
