NEW: Trump administration is continuing to look for ways to get a #CitizenshipQuestion on #2020Census, Justice Department attorneys confirm in court filing to U.S. District Judge George Hazel of Maryland. Filing doesn't provide new details about how admin plans to move forward👇
2. In short, DOJ attorneys are saying that while #CitizenshipQuestion is still blocked from #2020Census, Trump admin is not ready to give up yet. As far as we know according to DOJ/Commerce statements earlier this week, printing without Q still happening

3. Remember DOJ was only expected to tell Judge Hazel today whether Trump admin is stopping its efforts to add #CitizenshipQuestion. Since it's not, Hazel is now preparing to move ahead with reconsidering discrimination & conspiracy allegations in previously filed lawsuits.
4. If judge approves, here's what Trump admin would face to defend against claims that by adding #CitizenshipQuestion, it intended to discriminate against immigrant communities of color: up to 5 DOJ/Commerce officials questioned under oath, document release & Sept. 3-4 hearings👇

I’m still up because, well, I’m me, and I’m just really delving into the disaster that was Census-tweet-gate, and DOJ lawyers are almost directly telling federal judges, “We have no clue what the hell the president is thinking.”
US District Judge George Hazel more or less says that if this wasn’t the president, he’d order Trump himself to appear at the next hearing bc it’s become clear the lawyers don’t speak for their client.
This is only a 20-minute hearing, and yet it makes so exceptionally clear how damaging Trump is to the country — and how long the effects of his actions will be felt across the government and the country.

It’s being described as a loss—but the Trump administration actually won a partial victory Thursday in the lawsuits filed to prevent the reinstatement of a citizenship question on the U.S. Census.
We need accurate information on our population—including the number of non-citizens— for many reasons.

That includes distribution of federal funds, drawing of political boundary lines for state legislative and congressional seats, and formation of our nation’s immigration policy
There have been 23 decennial censuses since 1790.

All but one between 1820 and 2000 asked about citizenship or place of birth.

In 2010, the #citizenshipquestion was moved to the American Community Survey—which is sent out annually to many American households.

NEW: The Justice Department alleges in a court filing that Michael Cohen "coordinated with one or more members" of the Trump campaign to pay off two women who claimed to have had affairs with the president.
More: DOJ says Cohen and the National Enquirer coordinated with "one or more members" of Trump's campaign to "deal with negative stories about Individual-1's relationships with women" by buying their stories to silence them.
The charging documents make it pretty clear who "Individual-1" is. (Hint: Trump.)
