To lay the proper foundations of faith & 'Ilm - I would NOT recommend brothers & sisters seek to do that through an Islamic Studies degree at a Western university. You should study in a confessional institute & with scholars with Iman!

The theological, historical, epistemological foundations need to be taught by scholars who are Believers....the heirs of the Prophets. It is not merely an academic exercise, it's about making your heart firm upon Iman.
Once you reach a certain level of Islamic knowledge and you see the benefit in studying Islamic studies at a Western institution - then your foundations should be firm and there should be benefit in you doing so. And you should do so with caution.
I myself chose not to study Islamic studies at a Western university until I graduated from an Islamic seminary and studied for many years with Muslim scholars who were of high character. Islamic Studies depts at Unis started off as Orientalist institutes for colonialist times.
They are not the place to establish your faith, the foundations of your deen, nor to learn about purifying your heart and establishing worship.
In fact without the foundations - you will be exposed to many confusing ideas, prematurely.
