This is a really interesting, well-written piece.

I’ve been wondering exactly where Soriano fits in with Deripaska, Rybolovlev, and Netanyahu for awhile.

Scott answers many of those questions here.
Reminder:

Rybolovlev is the Russian who bought Trump’s Florida mansion for $95 million — just a *little* above the $41 million Trump paid for it four years earlier.

Rybolovlev never lived there.
Deripaska is one of the most wealthy oligarchs in Russia. He has close ties to Putin, Paul Manafort, and Konstantin Kilimnik.

His most recent endeavor involves building steel plants in Kentucky after McConnell and Rand Paul voted to remove sanctions from his businesses.

For those of you who are bummed out about Mueller’s testimony yesterday:

Take a deep breath. Ignore the news articles.

The testimony wasn’t a “flop.”

Perhaps it didn’t live up to reality-TV expectations, but Mueller did exactly what he’s done from start: 1/3
He was deliberate, honest, and offered a poignant take on present-day America.

He was never going to stand in front of Congress and yell “impeach the MF.”

Nonetheless, when questioned effectively, he gave answers that were absolutely damning to POTUS. 2/3
It’s also moving the needle. Over five new lawmakers have called for impeachment since his testimony.

Nadler himself pushed Pelosi for an immediate inquiry during their meeting yesterday.

I know sometimes people think I’m irrationally optimistic, but it won’t be long now. <END>

Pelosi is being urged to announce an impeachment inquiry today. I’m told that’s most likely not going to happen, but that she’s “a hell of a lot closer to green-lighting it than she was”

Take that as you will, but it sounds like positive news to me.
Cummings sounds like he’s there.

Nadler and Schiff sounds like they’re there.

Pelosi, waiting on you.
Well.

She just said she’s going to impeach him if they keep stonewalling.

I respect her making sure all the boxes are checked, but the American people’s patience won’t last much longer.

Nadler starts the hearing by pointing out Mueller’s long history of integrity. Now he’s quoting directly from Mueller’s report on obstruction of justice.
Nadler:

“Any other person who acted in this way would be charged with crimes.”
Mueller is looking at Collins like he’s something disgusting on the bottom of his shoe.

We celebrate the 4th of July because of the successful fight against a monarchy, the result of which became the United States itself. Memorial and Veterans day honor among other, those who fought against fascism in WWII and Armed Services day was created during the Cold War.

2/ I’m surprised it took Thiel—an intelligent Stanford Law grad—so long to figure out that freedom (as defined by libertarians) isn’t compatible with democracy.

2/ Libertarianism, according to👇 means "the only actions that should be forbidden by law are those that involve the initiation of force against those who have not themselves used force."

Libertarians view government regs and the agencies that promulgate them as a form of force.

I've been reading a lot about Ajax (for my new project) recently...
... and as someone who has just come back into mainstream ancient world studies after c. 5 years of disability studies-led approaches to ancient texts, I'm really shocked by the irresponsible way that even very modern scholarship on this play deals with discussions of suicide.
I have seen book / article / chapter after book / article / chapter that uses the phrase "commit suicide" or asks "why does Ajax commit suicide?" when we have been told repeatedly by suicide prevention workers that these are dangerous. (Images from the Samaritans*)

First annexation is 1.04 acres at 66 South Cherryvale Road. An existing 5,792-square-foot home is on the property, belonging to Scott Mason Raney and Min Sheng.
The applicants wish to add an accessory dwelling unit to the yard, but they will add it to the front rather than the backyard, bc some neighbors were concerned, according to Shannon Moeller with the city. (I think is what she said)
Planning board unanimously recommended that council OK the annexation but not allow new structures in the 100-year floodplain on the property. City staff did not endorse that restriction, bc mitigation can take it out of the floodplain.

Can we talk for a minute about the increasing interest in “the impact of including women”?

What I want to point out is the tendency to over-simplify (usually by over-generalization) this question and the resulting cost to women and society. 1/?
First, I want to acknowledge the rational basis of asking the essentialized question: “women” are often initially excluded from politics as a class, and thus the question makes sense on its face—what if we included them as a class? 2/?
And sometimes when we rewrite policy, it sure looks like we have included them as a class, because we do things like remove “sex” as a qualifier for voting rights or institute a quota that requires a certain number of “women” candidates or cabinet members. 3/?
