Today I wanna talk about the attitude of Superiors to their subordinates in Nigerian work space
THREAD
Yesterday I had need to run a quick lab test in a side lab in the teaching hospital where I work.
I was so disgusted by the attitude of the lady scientist to a poor student who have come to scavenge for knowledge
First I walked in when she was asking her to pick trash and get a broom to sweep the floor.
The hospital of course has a beheeve of folks who receive pay to keep the place clean.Infact a company is on a permanent contract to ensure sanitation in the hospital
But just to remind the student how lowly she was, they asked to first use her hand to pick trash then get a broom to sweep
As she was doing the free job she gets lashed for this and for that.
Lady scientist said she regretted teaching some students the previous day, according to her they are too lazy.
"Who even permitted you into my lab "
How's a government establishment your lab just because you head it or are the most senior person that work there? Their curriculum require them to go for the practicals, the school failed in making proper arrangements for this vital part of their training
Yet her self help efforts is here being ridiculed
These workers would strike for every opportunity. In her pay slip you'd see "teaching allowance" since they claim they also teach students
Yet here she was feeling that doing her job was being magnanimous.
They curse the poor students to timidity. It gets worse when a patient or relative says hello or acknowledges the student, it's like challenging the gods and they make sure they'd show the whole world
How much you don't matter. They scream at these students, call them names and make them feel worthless just for coming to learn.
Just as this girl was picking her trash, an intern glanced at her and bossed "why are you not wearing your lab coat?" Her effort to explain it got stained in the main lab only invited more insults and then she was ordered to get out and never return
This is a typical encounter in the hospital, the worst is the doctors!
It is as if we doctors are thought specially how to be rude to younger colleagues
There are tales of consultants slapping house officers and even registrars.
Insulting them and making mockery of them before patients and relatives
The manners of Nigerian doctors to their junior colleagues can be worse than warden to prisoner.
Yet these junior colleagues do all the works without credit or recognition or even appreciation
The university is not an exception. The lecturers treat undergraduate and post graduate students like slaves.I have seen many post grad students abandon their studies due to nastiness of their supervisors
Many demand gifts and patronage relentlessly or else you would be frustrated. The student is at the mercy of his supervisor. No regulations, no scrutiny. The lecturers are gods who dish out good or bad luck as they choose
This unprofessional attitude negates the very spirit of tutulage and professionalism
Our work environment needs to be sanitized of we are ever gonna make any meaningful progress. Civil rights are totally non existent here.
Same reasons a police or army officer sees civilians as their subjects. Insulting you routinely, harassing you and barking instructions to you as if they were gods.
Operating in this kind of toxic environment naturally produces sad, depressed and angry citizens.
Our epidemic mental health issues are very related to our level of hostility to one another.
We should do something to reintroduce courtesy and professionalism in our clime
