Actually it isn’t true that Liberal political will is lacking. Attawapiskat water issues are caused by the quality of water chosen to supply the community. The water source is a small lake or even what you may call a slough. It isn’t sufficient to serve the growing community.
It’s been recommended the water source be changed to the nearby river instead. But even this change will continue to present problems with chlorination. And that is the problem. Chlorinating the water is what’s causing the toxic chemicals to be produced.
It’s difficult to manage. Summer & fall deposit biological material in the water. Filtration is inadequate to remove the microscopic material from the water. Chlorine, to disinfect the water, upon contact with biological material, creates chemicals that render it toxic.
It’s a viscous circle. And the cause of most long term water bans in Canada. Few filtration systems are capable of filtering the amount of microscopic biological material in the water. Two filtration systems were tested. The filtration system chosen has repeatedly failed.
This is the problem with water quality in small remote communities. It’s difficult and unpredictable.

Is it further aggravated by insufficient funding? Yes.

But it isn’t the cause.

The cause is the quality of source water. And reliable filtration.
No political party or government can change the quality of source water in Attawapiskat. It’s the natural habitat. Mitigation is all any government can offer and all Attawapiskat can expect.

However, all options for mitigation have not been tried.
Before other mitigation methods are chosen & attempted, AFN is coordinating development of enforceable regulations, with FN communities and leaders (including Attawapiskat).

Development of on reserve achievable regulations, with the support, but not direction, of government.
That’s called self determination. And self governance. Something no sitting government, neither Conservative or Liberal, has attempted to do in the past.

Unfortunately, it takes time. Since it’s a very new process, it takes more time than many need (especially Attawapiskat).
But when those regulations are in place, funding and long term solutions can be decided. Until then, its short term fixes. That’s reality.

Building a new water purification facility, in a remote location, before the regulations are in place would be foolish.
If the regulations are unachievable by Attawapiskat, it would be a waste of precious resources that could be used to relocate to better source water, if it’s unattainable in the current location. Or it may mean choosing a source intake, much further from the community.
All this is conjecture until the regulations are decided by FN themselves and codified into the legal system. All that takes time and patience. Something MSM could explain, but continues to choose not to do. All of this thread is publicly available information.
So your position is misinformed.

I do hope you’ll reconsider, and use your vote to allow FN to continue to assume control and regulation of their water safety.

In a different thread, I wrote how the CPC blames FN capacity. But that’s not the case.

Designing a regulatory system for water in rural & remote locations is difficult, technical and complicated. But I have faith in FN to develop achievable & safe regulations for their communities. And I have faith that LPC will deliver the funding and support as required.

Do you?
