thread! I want to share the story of my brother's cats and the arc they've been through over the past 8 months. 🐈
this is gouda. my brother walked into a shelter late last year, said "give me your least adoptable cat", and walked out with gouda. she has socks! 🧀🧦

gouda was abused in the past. she yowled when my brother tried to put her in the walk-in closet as her space, hid under the bed, and refused to come out. a previous adopter returned her because she wouldn't come out for months. here's a rare sighting of her coming out for treats.
this is pumpkin. he joined my family in 2006! he is my round son. he hates other cats. here he is asking my brother to do something about gouda stealing his water (after she started to come out!)
my brother slowly got gouda out of her shell. she really did hide under his bed for months, but slowly she started coming out. here she's enjoying nature tv. pumpkin and gouda still hid from each other.
but slowly, they started getting comfortable around each other!!! they would even sleep on the same bed!
sometimes gouda would get closer to pumpkin. sometimes pumpkin would sit next to her but pretend he didn't notice her. in this picture, pumpkin is tsundere cat and gouda is saying "notice me senpai"
over time, they became friends. they shared a love of my brother's pants (he started putting out a decoy pair for them) and started sleeping near each other.
for months, I'd been updating my work's #cats slack channel about pumpkin and gouda and their "will they won't they" friendship, and one day I finally got to give the biggest season finale style update: THEIR BUTTS WERE TOUCHING 🚨
after that, they got closer and closer, possibly bonding over their love of my brother. when I look back at gouda 8 months ago, who couldn't even come out from under the bed unless she was alone, I feel so happy looking at these pictures.
my brother recently found a deal for a $15 cat tree (shout out to slickdeals). here they are a few days ago. 😻 the end!
