Anyone who lives in Africa knows that DSTV dominates subscription TV, but DSTV is beyond the reach of most Africans (too expensive).

What Beijing did through StarTimes TV, is make subscription TV more accessible. A smart move.
There's a common thread here - Chinese business people interact with the African market on the ground level - and identify & exploit opportunities. From C-Way Water to Transsion (Tecno, Infinix, Itel, Boomplay, Synix), it is the same thing. Now O-Pay is coming.
The US response to all this tends to be panicked - and totally off point like "increasing military to military exchanges between the US & Africa".

No, US business people are simply not desperate enough to explore the African market. They can make more money at home.
The key point is; how strong is the economic rationale for increased US - Africa engagement? The answer is, not very strong. Apart from investments in the oil and gas sector, there's very little of interest to the US private sector in Africa.
