Tomorrow, in Addis-Ababa, the Peace & Security Council (PSC) of @_AfricanUnion meets in emergency on the situation in Sudan under. Nigeria will chair it. It's the 1st meeting of any policy organ of the #AU on the epochal situation unfolding in Khartoum

Sudan matters to the stability of Africa in a way that arguably no other country does. It is a complex, big, fragile country with borders to the most complex & fragile regions of the continent. The potential for regional stability contagion are huge if Sudan is distressed
Sudan is critical to stability in the #Sahel, North Africa, the #GulfOfAden, the #NileBasin, the #GreatLakes, East Africa; the Horn of Africa, Central Africa & #WestAfrica. There's no other #African country whose wellbeing can so ripple through the continent like Sudan.
#Nigeria has a special interest in Sudan & not merely because of proximity through NE #Nigeria & Chad. The ties are many. 1st, both countries share common populations & cross-border nationalities. The Baggara of Sudan's Kordofan are found in Chad & #Nigeria as Shuwa Arabs
2nd, when Lugard murdered Sokoto's Sultan Attahiru in the Battle of Burmi in 1903, the remainder of his defeated army & family led by his son, Muhammmad Bello bin Attahiru, (Mai Wurno) were exiled in Sudan. Their descendants still live in Sudan theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
3rd, Sudan has always been a stop for many #Nigerians Muslim pilgirms, many of whom, would trek all the way to Hijaz, crossing thro Sudan. On their way back, many settled & intermarried in Sudan, which today has up to 5m ppl of #Nigerian descent

What happens in Sudan, therefore, matters to #Nigeria, not merely as part of #Africa policy but indeed as part of a responsibility that is much more intimate. #Nigeria's leaders, therefore, have a duty to offer articulate leadership in the search to stabilize Sudan
This is why, as the PSC meets tomorrow, #Nigeria must lead the rest of Africa ins sending a clear message to Sudan's Generals - their time is up. They should listen to their people & free the country to make progress. A Sudan that is at peace with itself is essential for #Africa

Paul Arisa was born in 1989. He graduated from Federal Government College (FGC) Ohafia in Abia State, #Nigeria, in 2007. He later went to Abia State University where he graduated with a degree in Estate Management. He had a promising future ahead of him.
Smetime in 2011, however, the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) diagnosed Mr. Arisa wth Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. He was treated for the ailment there with chemotherapy & appeared initially appeared to make some progress

Despite manifest incongruities in the official story-line concerning @MBuhari's decision to remove the Chief Justice of Nigeria in Jan 2019, I was willing to suspend my disbelief & wait for govt to present evidence to support its claims of asset malfeasance in the #OonoghenTrial
When it launched its fevered campaign against the Chief Justice before the #OnnoghenTrial in the month before #NigeriaDecides2019, the govt claimed thro its hired hands that he had money running into Billions in multiple bank accounts & over 55 houses

Hired amplifiers were procured to skewer a man who could not defend himself. In the media, he was a thief, a rogue & much worse. Digital lynch mobs, many of them amplifier bots with transparent ends to serve created a mood music with a life of its own

2mrw, we'll have another episode of #NigeriaDecides. It'll be of huge significance for the credibility of international election observation. In many ways It's the 1st major test for Int'l #ElectionObservers since the fiasco of #KenyaDecides2017
#DomesticObservers will also be deployed all over the country for #NigeriaDecides. There are 119,973 Polling Units (PUs). Observers will not be in all the PUs. The goal, however, is to cover all 8,809 wards in the country. Tens of thousands of Observers will be involved in this.
One major reason for the inability to deploy #ElectionObservers all over the country is security. In parts of some states, including Borno (NE), Rivers (SS) & Zamfara (NW), it is impossible to guarantee the safety & security of both election officials & #ElectionObservers.

Article 38.3 of the GDPR creates a series of protections for a Data Protection Officer’s independence.

They can’t be told to do anything.They can’t be penalised for saying unwelcome things. They can’t be dismissed from their duties.

These are unique, critical protections.
Recently, @klillington nominated @DRIalerts to make a complaint on her behalf (using the process set out in Art 80 of GDPR).

The trigger was the discovery that the DPO for @welfare had been given an instruction by the Secretary-General (the top official).
The instruction wanted the Department’s Privacy Notice changed so it wouldn’t tell the public that @welfare were processing the biometric data of citizens (even though they were and still are).

Today’s Sunday Times (um, [insert link to print paper]) reports that the DPC’s #PSC investigation report has found @welfare_ie’s claimed legislative power

“does not provide a sound legal basis to compel people to have a card to access other public services”
As the state cannot rely on consent (as any consent could not meet the requirement for being freely given, given the power imbalance), this- if it stands- would mean that all of the processing done without another legal basis would be in breach.
I gave evidence to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection on 8th February this year, trying to warn of this self inflicted crisis.

The State continues to be, imo, entirely disingenuous about the #psc rollout and is still pushing it through without proper legal basis or authority so that it reaches critical mass.

One thing is clear: they are avoiding any binding decisions on the PSC. #thread

You might recall that, since @RSAIreland backtracked on requiring #PSC for driving licences, passports are effectively the last non-social welfare holdout on mandatory/compulsory use.

This type of requirement is what takes it from mere "token" to de facto ID card.
At every step along the way over the past 12 months or so, in my experience, the authorities have backed down when challenged. The difficulty is that they find a different, non-PSC, reason to back down.
