The ascendance of Priti Patel and Sajid Javid to positions of power is only a sign of progress if you see tokenism (in which people of colour must assimilate to oppressive ideologies in return for representation) itself as progressive.

Wow, lots of people very upset that I don’t consider British Asian people gleefully implementing the hostile environment A Victory For My Ancestors.
If people of colour can only achieve success by kicking down, then I don’t think we can call it progress.

I think that a Labour government led by Corbyn is the strongest bulwark the UK has against a slide into ultra-nationalist politics.

I also think for that to be the case at the next election (which might be much sooner than anticipated), certain issues need addressing urgently.
The 2017 electoral coalition which robbed the Tories of their majority was made up of regionally and socially diverse cohorts of people, with a particular divergence of political views regarding Brexit. I’m just stating the obvious here.
In the intervening 2 years, Labour’s leadership have had to deal with factors which have made holding this coalition together exceptionally challenging: a hostile media, the polarisation of the Brexit issue, and the strength of the new left in the grassroots but not the PLP.

At the moment, Labour looks like a party of Leavers to hardcore Remain voters, and Remainers to hardcore Leave voters - and prevaricators to those in between. It'll be a close vote in Peterborough tomorrow, and the Brexit Party may well win;
... as they'd enjoy being boosted by low turnout and have encouraged voters to see the binary as them vs the Lib Dems, to hoover up the Tory support and chip away at the Labour one.
The moral case for Labour's soft Brexit compromise, imo, is strong. Leave still has a democratic mandate, the country is deeply divided along 2016 lines, politics shouldn't be played as a zero-sum game.

The political case is weak. Because, quite frankly, very few people want it.

I represented the Irish party at the European Federation of GPs and edited what we laughingly called its theoretical journal.
I also spent a year in the French party and, more interestingly, on the far left of the German party. I thought the Irish party had the potential to become a party of and for #SocialMovements. I found I was wrong, and left.

Everyday I see my reading list growing impossibly long despite reading more than ever before in my life. After I read a great book, I look to the citations and think, now I want to read all of those.
If I read with a note pad and pen alongside me, I can't get through much more than a few paragraphs without writing a ton of notes and losing my mind in deep thought. It makes for slow going but deep comprehension and magnificent inspiration.
I want to go back to Hobbes v Locke. Then Nietzsche and Freud Again. Then Rousseau. Trace that all the way to Blank Slatists and Evo Biologists, and the widening divide between science and fantasy.

Now, most of the time, as a society, we do a shitty job of creating an environment that is conducive to people disclosing. We deny, we excuse, we victim-blame, we question people's motives for disclosing, we accuse them of lying, and we enable abusers in positions of power.
