The Electoral Buzzsaw of ‘Medicare for All’ (membership required) talkingpointsmemo.com/prime-beta/the… via @TPM // I support Medicare For All, but @joshtpm goes through the pro's and con's. I suspect there are many ways to get to universal health care coverage. What there isn't is a GOP plan.
/ So, the only healthcare debate is among and between Democrats. The GOP plan, as Alan Grayson captured it: "just die." Democrats should run on twin themes: 1. The GOP voted a gazillion times to repeal Obamacare. Trump's DOJ is in federal courts trying to kill Obamacare. The
/ Dems should highlight those votes and briefs in campaign and social media ads. 2. The Dems are going to get to universal coverage. No matter what the plan a candidate has, it is going to go through the hearings process in House & Senate. Laws don't come from heaven. But, we
/ need everyone with real health care as quickly as possible. And Democrats need to emphasize that your private health insurance is only keepable under two conditions now: (a) your HR department keeps the health insurance company, or, (b) you keep your job. Lose your job, lose
/ your health insurance. When your health insurance depends upon your employer, without a union, you are a serf. You are at a severe disadvantage. Which doctor network you are in is decided by your HR department, not you. People fool themselves into thinking that they are
/ deciding. @joshtpm also raises a good point. If companies save money under M4A, will they just pocket that money or compensate the workers with it? On the balance sheet, those payments are compensation to workers. A worker costs hourly wages, Medicare tax, Social Security tax,
/ health care costs. So, who gets the savings? The Democrats have to emphasize that Trump & McConnell, with Boehner & Ryan, voted 70+ times to repeal Obamacare and replace it with nothing.
