The problem with the "don't impeach if you don't have the votes" argument is right here: there are no consequences being visited on this administration for ignoring and breaking the law. (1/) washingtonpost.com/immigration/ac…
/ Even if you don't have the votes in the Senate to convict, putting the evidence out there in a trial and making Republicans take a stand publicly via voting one way or the other is a consequence. Right now, there is no penalty for tacitly endorsing this lawlessness. None.
/ To those who say impeachment will backfire and make Trump more powerful, what exactly is he now? His administration ignores subpoenas, lies with impunity, breaks laws by the hour, disregards Court decisions...*and there are no consequences for them doing so*
/ Laws are not self-enforcing. Neither are judges' dicta. And the Democratic house majority--elected to hold Trump accountable--has abdicated its oversight and continues to let this administration flout the law. Tough words and tweets from Congressional leaders mean nothing
/ and so you get a thousand more stolen kids, even though the federal courts said stop. You get ICE terrorizing communities of color and arbitrarily imprisoning people. They called that "disappearing" when it was done in Argentina. AND THERE ARE NO CONSEQUENCES
/ The Trump administration doesn't care that Dems and progressives are angry, because that anger has led to nothing but hearings and empty rhetoric. If I ignored a subpoena or violated a judge's ruling, my ass would be in a courtroom, or jail. You know, consequences.
/ Norms will not save us. Mueller will not save us. This is not business as usual. This is generational damage on an already broken society. And our leadership in Congress that is not equal to the moment. I hate to say it, but I've extended as much benefit of the doubt as I can.
/ Something is only unconstitutional if we enforce the actual Constitution. Something is only illegal if the laws are actually applied. Checks and balances don't work if the People's House refuses to either check or balance. Until and if they decide to do so, nothing will change
/ If this were a game of cards, the Republicans have taken out their own stacked deck, drawn extra cards, and lit the table on fire--meanwhile the Democratic leadership believes if it can just wait patiently and take its proper turn, they'll draw two aces and win the hand.
I dunno. I don't think we're at Slicy Boi territory, but each day brings a new catastrophe for a ruling class completely incapable of addressing it. In the past, that type of pattern has not led to optimal results. Just saying.
