This is a big issue, and it's one that a lot of people in the media and on the left continue to ignore relative to the immigration crisis.

Imagine a relatively common hypothetical: Single Honduran man wants to come to America to work because pay is much > here. He's not really interested in becoming an American, just earning $. Clearly doesn't have legit claim for asylum and a visa could take years. What does he do?
He can 1) wait for the visa 2) try to cross illegally or come to a PoE and apply 4 asylum with high chance he gets deported or 3) joins a caravan/ find a family unit to be part of knowing he would likely get released during asylum claim and authorities won't pursue him after.
If your policy is catch and release, you incentivize number 3, which can have bad consequences and is unfair to legal immigrants. But makes perfect sense for him because the reward is great and cost is small.
We can talk about the symptoms at the border and how we improve conditions all day long, but it won't matter until you fix the underlying issues and change the incentive structure.
