A frank look at how the new @latimes is doing. We need digital subscriptions to survive, but we’re dealing with a lot of “churn” from new readers signing up and then canceling. Figuring out the new world of paywalls is pretty hard, but we gotta get there. niemanlab.org/2019/07/the-l-…
A couple things: it’s really hard to overstate how ravaged the business side of our company was before the sale, and rebuilding it has *not* been easy. But also, speaking as a grunt here, the investment in the newsroom has been really fun and journalistically invigorating.
Anyway, it’s not sustainable for journalism just to expect billionaires to sink endless money into a pit without seeing great progress. So for a bunch of different reasons, I’m hopeful we can keep figuring it out.
Lastly, I am thankful every day for @latguild for at least getting us this far. And one of the unexpected outcomes of unionizing is that now there are a lot of rank-and-file folks who feel a personal stake in the success of the business, because we’ve now got a hand on the wheel.
Anyway, if supporting a union newsroom that’s putting in the work is exactly your sort of thing, you can plunk down your hard-earned dollars right here. latimes.com/subscriptions/
