I’m such a fervent @UKLabour supporter because I grew up in the US without an NHS. At 25 I was in a car accident hat left me w/ @ $50,000 in medical debt. Then I moved to UK yrs later & experienced firsthand how well the NHS took care of my son through his cancer treatment.
I just cannot countenance a government that underfunds the NHS & social care, leading directly to the misery & death of so many beautiful, vital poor & disabled ppl. Labour started the NHS & their manifesto & their actions support the NHS today.

The goal must be to eliminate private health insurance cos. Their *sole function* is to make money off of you, the patient, or “consumer” as they call you. Billions of your dollars each year go to their CEOs & their *armies* of staff whose job it is to deny your claims.
If the change of switching from private health insurance to a true single-payer, free-at-point-of-use health care system is scary to you, I can only tell you my own story which is that my family made that switch when we moved from the US to the UK 5 yrs ago.
From signing up to using the local general practitioner all the way through using the NHS as they cared for my son Henry as he was disabled & then killed by brain cancer, we have been awe-struck by what a national health service that offers true universal care can do.

How to say this simply? I lived in the US until I was 37 & had private health insurance most of my life. For the past 5 yrs I’ve lived in the UK & use the NHS. The NHS is a HUGE part of why I might never move back to the US.
It is a REVELATION to leave behind navigating private health insurance & all its Byzantine restrictions on what care you can get & when & the nightmare of getting a prescription paid for. With the NHS it’s free-at-point-of-use. It is not *free*, as we pay for it thru taxes.
In England prescriptions cost £8. In Scotland they’re free. I think they’re free in Wales & N. Ireland too. Yet I giggle with joy at paying the £8 after a lifetime of either paying way more than that or having it denied *even when I had insurance*.

MAD Magazine is closing. Like millions of others, MAD Magazine showed me what humor is for and thus gave me my life’s direction. I used my allowance of $1.50 to buy each issue, which in 1987 cost $1.35 [(cheap!) it said next to the price].
In 1987 my parents took me, age 10 and my 5 year old sister to New York City from Massachusetts for our first visit. We saw Cats, went to the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. We also visited 485 MADison Avenue where MAD was headquartered.
I think we arrived after hours as the door to the offices (which, as it was 1987, we were able to just take the elevator up to, no problem) were locked and nobody answered. A well dressed man in the hall explained they were closed and said to come back earlier the next day.

I am genuinely sad.

I am sad because I spent my day, as I have so many other thousands of other days, working as part of the incredible team that is the #NHS.
I got in early and I stayed late and while I was there I, along with thousands of others, cared for, supported, educated and helped patients.
I am lucky enough to love my job and I love the team I work within and not just because my team cares for, supports, educates and helps me and others but because they share my values of valuing patients over financial gain.
