Am I cynical, naive or just stupid? But I see the role of a judge as one who rules over court proceedings and interprets the law. The law should be the law. Once it is written, if written well, there should be little political juice to be squeezed from it, IMO. So,
a judge should be a judge should be a judge. Or they used to be (naive or stupid?). But the Senate is cranking out these judicial confirmations like the world will end tomorrow and the only thing to stop the world from ending is more Trump-nominated judges.
Which, coincidentally or not is the exact opposite way they paced confirmations when there was a Democrat in the White House.
This, combined with their willingness to tolerate any- and everything Trump dishes out including staggering levels of corruption, racism and foreign policy buffoonery because
“!JUDGES!”, makes me stop and think.
The Republican Party I remember would NEVER have blown up the deficit, sucked up to dictators, tolerated foreign interference in our elections, tolerated the denigration of fellow members of the House and Senate, allowed a war hero to be mocked.
Not even for judges. Because there would always more judicial nominations. Maybe from another Republican president. But even if from a Democratic one, there would be a way to extract more moderate nominations.
But the fact that Republicans are willing to blow any and all political capital with independent/moderate voters, forever alter the rules of the Senate, burn down everything their party has stood for in my lifetime,
for THESE PARTICULAR justices, makes me seriously question the integrity of these judges (cynical?).
And if Putin’s plan is to get us to doubt our institutions, I guess he’s got me. But he didn’t get me to this place of doubt alone. He was aided by the cravenness of the Republican Senators.
