I learned from @TimAlberta’s book American Carnage that Mitt decided that the best way to win the 2012 GOP primary was to run to the right of every other candidate on one hot button issue: immigration. Mitt helped make the rabidly anti-immigrant party that Trump inherited.
Don’t forget that both Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee, as governors, had supported some policies that were relatively generous to undocumented people, including college scholarships for undocumented students.
Mitt attacked his opponents on precisely this part of their records. Who cares whether Mitt’s heart was really invested in such nastiness? He chose to feed those demons in the GOP base, so I hope you’ll forgive me if I tell Mitt to take his sympathies and shove them.
