I still haven't quite worked out the resistance of racists supporting a racist president to being called racists despite how proudly and emboldened they are to say racist things. Instead, they call their critics racists for objecting to #racism.
Likewise, Obama, for pointing out inequalities and sympathizing with suffering minorities, is labeled racist by the racists. He's called divisive by those Trumpers. He, like so many others before him, is called a "troublemaker".
That crowd denies they or their president are racists. They claim they're being unfairly maligned for mere political differences. They actually get upset when you say they're racists.
Why, it's as though they too think being a racist is a bad thing! Thus they decide to paint themselves as the real victims, ignoring all evidence to the contrary. That way they can say racist things but think they are righteous and brave for doing so.
The racists are upset they can't use the N-word freely. They have been robbed! They've been limited in speech and that is the greater crime, not the hateful, vicious use of the word itself against blacks! Even those who never used the word out loud feel robbed.
Another case of denial is their refusal to consider themselves to still be benefiting from years of oppression of others. "Hey, I didn't own slaves!" Instead, others seeking equality is considered being done at their expense.
Denial, denial, denial. That's the key to being racist in 2019. Pretend the other person is guilty of what they are accusing you of doing. "I didn't rob the bank! You robbed the bank!", "I am the least bank robbing person ever." Also, accuse critics of being emotional.
Don't forget a racist's good treatment toward a black associate or family member absolves them of ever being racist. If called racist, they respond "You don't know me!" as though their denied racism is excused somehow.
I've no idea how to break through a racist's bubble of thought and make them see the awfulness of Trump and themselves. Nothing I say works but only provokes resentment and digging in. Any ideas? Is it too late for them?
In 2019, with America's racist underbelly fully exposed, it sure seems like we can only continue to show how ugly racism is and wait for racists to grow old and die, to be replaced by a wonderfully multiethnic population.
Teach your children well and vote at every opportunity is a starting point, I believe.
Sidenote:
No. of friends from college revealed to be racist: 0

No. of friends from HS and earlier revealed to be racist: Too many to count.
I ask, didn't all those racist old friends grow up watching the same multiethnic shows I did, like Sesame Street, Star Trek, The Electric Company or Mr. Roger's Neighborhood? They also must have missed the fact that Archie Bunker was a pitiful caricature and not a hero.
For the all of the above reasons, I support #ImpeachNow efforts not just for Trump's crimes but for condemnation of this ugliness about us with its growing body count. Racism must be seen as unamerican again.
