It is amazing how a set of Delhi journalists are undermining the work of some of their fellow journalists in Kashmir, calling them “agency-enabled”, hiding their own incompetence and blindspots.
I have a small Maruti car here with local number, driven by Open’s deputy photo editor, @ashishsphotos. Sometimes we hire a cab owned by an old man whom we call “chacha”.
On August 5, me and two other Kashmiri journalists went to Additional DC, Srinagar, Dr Hanif Balki’s office for an official pass. The application is still pending.
We begged friends in Police, BSF, CRPF for a little access to internet. Nobody has it. We bullied our way into PCR which has internet, but were escorted out in two minutes.
How do we manage around? With a little journalistic ingenuity. “Bhaisahab, bus saamne hotel mein jaana hai”. “Aadab Jenab, bus dost ka yahan jaana hai.” We were not prevented at any point anywhere in Kashmir.
We went to Batmaloo, Hazratbal, Bemina, Panthachowk, Pampore, Pulwama, Khrew, old Srinagar, Nishat, among other places without any help, escort, PSO, curfew pass, permission. Many others went to Sopore, Anantnag with no hindrance.
Now it is not my fault that the internet is not working at Farooq Abdullah’s residence. You have a problem, file a petition in the Supreme Court.
Any Kashmiri TV journalist who claims he is not allowed to function, please get in touch with me through head office. I will come and pick you in my car and take you wherever you want to go.
