But it does make it quite satisfying when the person who answers the phone asks why you’re cancelling and you get to say: “Because most of your serious journalists have now left and I can’t in good conscience continue to prop up a rabid propaganda machine for the extreme right.”
And when I said exactly those words to the guy on the end of the phone at Oz subscriptions he said: “Yeah, fair enough. We’ve been getting that a lot lately.” The evil empire is crumbling.
I don’t celebrate the demise of any media outlet but when your business model is to run campaigns that vilify the marginalised and attack the vulnerable, then you’re no longer in the business of journalism, you’re a vehicle for misery and hate. You don’t deserve public support.
I’ve spent the last few weeks working on a story about the extraordinarily high rates of suicide in the LGBTI community and the political ‘debate’ that helped fuel this crisis. I have no doubt in my mind that the Oz’s reporting is partly to blame. Their conduct is unconscionable
And now they have an entire page on their website dedicated to attacking the trans community, after years of demonising people, many of them children, who already exist on the margins thanks to discrimination and the kind of bullshit misinformation the Oz peddles.
As @Joe_c_Ball from Switchboard told me, “suicide is often a consequence of hate.” When you continue to attack a community still reeling from a public “debate’ that unleashed unprecedented hate, you as the journalist writing these hit pieces are culpable for the toll that takes.
It is beyond my comprehension how any journalist can be so lacking in empathy, so disconnected from the consequences of their words that they can sleep at night knowing that this is happening and still not consider showing restraint or compassion.
