I don't agree with @Noahpinion's critique of Warren's trade plan. We should run our trade policies to benefit Americans, and we should run development policies to benefit poor countries. Let's stop offshoring jobs and production to benefit other countries. bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
@Noahpinion Here's @Noahpinion: "The plan would require any country that enters into a trade deal with the US would have to meet the same environmental labor and safety standards as the US. And it would force a renegotiation of any trade deal that doesn't already include these provisions."
@Noahpinion I respect @Noahpinion a great deal because he's honest about the stakes. Our trade policies are designed to shift U.S. wealth abroad, and a lot of progressive trade thinkers believe that's a good thing. Most Americans don't.
@Noahpinion In trade circles, saying America shouldn't cost-adjust foreign imports for low wages and environmental standards is often seen as racist. How dare you keep Bangladesh from climbing out of poverty?!? That kind of thing. It's time to toss that framework overboard.
@Noahpinion I've had multiple conversations with fancy old trade lawyers in rich D.C. suburbs who tell them their whole careers were dedicated to moving wealth from the U.S. to the global South. They are proud of it. They think getting rid of the U.S. middle class was a good trade.
@Noahpinion One way to understand the problem is the revulsion in leftist-liberal circles about the use of the term nationalism. Or the push for open borders. There really is a rejection of sovereign power and the obligations it implies to its own citizenry.
@Noahpinion The view expressed by @Noahpinion that export-led growth is a massive antidote to global poverty is widespread. @rodrikdani believes it. There's a lot of evidence for it. It's reasonable. I just don't buy it.
