Status on drugs and substance abuse among primary school pupils in Kenya - 2019 Report
The report states that 20.2% of Primary School pupils have ever used at least one drug or substance abuse in their lifetime with 7.2% reporting to have ever used alcohol. 6.0% of the Primary school pupils said they have ever used tobacco while 3.7% said they had used miraa.
The report by @NACADAKenya placed use of bhang at 1.2% while use of inhalants, heroin and cocaine stood at less than 1%
@NACADAKenya Primary School pupils are currently using prescription drugs, tobacco, alcohol and miraa/muguka at 7.2%, 3.2%, 2.6% and 2.3% respectively. The use of inhalants, bhang, heroin and cocain stands at below 1%.
@NACADAKenya The pupils reported to have obtained drugs from shops and kiosks near schools (28.6%), bars near school (25.7%) and friends (19.3%). Pupils who reported to have bought the drugs from fellow pupils and school workers was 13.7% and 13.6% respectively.
@NACADAKenya The report found out that pupils mostly abused drugs during school holidays (30%), on their way home from school (22.0%) with abuse during weekends at school standing at 21.0%. Inter-school competitions were responsible for 20% of drug abuse cases.
@NACADAKenya The @NACADAKenya survey commissioned in 2018 covered 3,307 pupils in 177 primary schools in classes 5-8 from 25 representative counties in Kenya.
