The #1619Project published online today and it is my profound hope that we will reframe for our readers the way we understand our nation, the legacy of slavery, and most importantly, the unparalleled role black people have played in this democracy. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
The conceit of the magazine is that nothing about modern American life has been left untouched by the colonists' decision to purchase that first group of enslaved Africans, that the year 1619 is as important to the American story as the year 1776.
The #1619Project is at one one of the most profoundly beautiful things I have ever seen, & also one of the most devastating. The arguments, meticulously researched, powerfully argued, make what to me is an irrefutable case that it's time to rewrite our narrative & tell the truth.
The contributors page tells a powerful story. Black writers, black poets, black photographers, original works from black artists. We are the descendants who are here to set the record straight.
And the design is haunting and beautiful. You will need time with this. It will be hard and crushing and uncomfortable. It has been 400 years. So, this is how it must be.

I really wish that stories on affirmative action would actually address the history of why it exists, *who* it was intended for and how POC cannot all be lumped together when only one group experienced chattel slavery and had the racial caste system built upon them.
It’s malpractice to keep writing stories about “minorities” and how some are “privileged” under affirmative action.
Affirmative action lawsuits like Harvard’s actually provide an excellent opportunity for a nuanced discussion of how the architecture of race and caste works, of the differing experiences of different racial minorities, of what it means to have largely arrived after legal discrim

I have some very sad news about a family member that I need to share. My dearest one, my black, faux-wood grained, Hyundai Sonata died this weekend. She was 16 years old. When I bought her in 2003, she was only the second new car I had ever owned--a position she maintains today.
2003 was such a momentous year for me. I graduated from grad school. I got married that year. Got my first full-time journalism job, which I worked alongside a part-time gig selling mattresses in order to pay my bills. My gleaming brand-new Hyundai seemed like such a luxury.
I had upgraded from my Kia Sephia and she had a tape deck AND a CD player and this fancy cupholder armrest in the back seat and if you squinted hard, she looked like a Jaguar, and, well, she was a nice as a Jaguar to me.

I’ve been saying for years that the reason so many white reporters ignored school segregation for so long is because their children benefited from it and they preferred to maintain it. Welp, here you go. You identify yourself as a reporter in the FIRST LINE for a reason.
This is also why the idea of objectivity is *bullshit.* You think the views of someone who works in Baltimore, lives in Howard County and opposes this school integration plan doesn’t impact political coverage?
And they think the media is left wing. Not when it comes to school Integration.

1. Question: How do mice locate objects with their whiskers? There are many models, but nobody knows for sure.

We investigated six models of whisker-guided object localization to determine the simplest model that fit behavior best.

2. We tried to keep things simple. We trained head-fixed mice to locate an object on one axis along the face using a single whisker. This approach limits the free parameters we need to tease apart to find the answer.
3. We found mice are incredibly good at this. They can discriminate the location of objects to better than half a millimeter spacing (2 degrees of whisker angle), using only one whisker!

Slavery really does touch everything in American history.

Slavery is not “the foundation on which this country is built.”

Understanding how profoundly it affected US history & culture is very important.

Transforming that into a smear on the American Dream is stupid & immoral.
Slavery has left its literal & metaphorical scars on America since its birth. But ours is the first nation ever conceived in liberty & dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Slavery has been a feature of virtually every human society since the species evolved. Perhaps older than that. It is among the oldest human institutions. By comparison w slavery, literacy, monogamy, & monotheism are mere passing fads.

So what explains the 2018 strike wave in red states?

130,000 teachers & support staff went on strike in West Virginia, Oklahoma, & Arizona.
Collective resistance is really hard.

- HUGE task of organising mass action
- repressive labor laws
- austerity; Rep AND Dem leaders say there’s no 💰
- threats of pay ✂️
- atomised workers, weak unions, no links between counties
- 👩‍🏫s’ political divisions
- despondency.
Fed up and frustrated, West Virginia educators strategised & networked - in meetings and online (via the United Facebook page).

They voted to walk out. And do they did. And this embodies experience of marching out together changed their perceptions

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether
