Talking about race is always a dicey proposition in America. Talking about it on Twitter? Probably stupid. But — true to form — here I go. 1/6
Recent events prompt me to say: I have never, ever considered myself a member of a race (except the human race). Of course, those in a racial majority have that luxury; others may not. 2/6
It’s not that these others WANT to think of themselves racially (necessarily). The world around them forces them to. 3/6
I have met people who love to think of themselves racially and ethnically, of their own free will. To each his own. 4/6
America is soaked in race-consciousness, always has been. I would like the country to be less race-conscious. Who is responsible? Racists or non-racists who insist that race be front and center? I have no way of apportioning responsibility. 5/6
One of my prayers for the country is that it let race recede, if possible. I would like to see “E pluribus unum” come to the fore. I’m not waitin’ up nights. But I like the thought, the ideal.

Thus concludeth my homily. 6/6
