#Bangkok is an assault on your culinary senses. This trip has changed my perception of Thai food & made me look beyond the typical red/green curry fare that you are served in India. Brace yourselves for some mouth-watering food pictures. Shot using #Pixel3XL barring a couple.
Let's start with Taling Pling. This egg salad with shrimp was by far the best single plate of food I've ever eaten this year. @amrutamalkar also sampled Butterfly Pea Iced Tea that magically changes from Blue to Purple when you pour the lemon syrup. This place is a must visit.
I'd heard so much about Durian (fruit) & its offensive smell that I wanted to avoid it. But, @amrutamalkar and I found a fairly easy package to consume the fruit in the form of a Kwality Walls ice cream flavour. Beyond the initial blast of repulsive smell, the taste ain't so bad.
Pad Krapow Gai is a dish consisting of sticky jasmine rice served with a fried egg and stir fried Thai Basil with chicken mince. You can replace chicken with a meat of your choice. I ate this at a small stall inside the Artbox Night Market. OMFG, mind=blown. Also, cheap af!
Black Canyan Coffee is everywhere in Bangkok. This is the Mocha with crushed Ice. @amrutamalkar and I couldn't finish one cup. I don't know how the residents of Bangkok keep walking around with such big cups of Tea and Coffee. It is a part of their lifestyle. Excellent stuff!
Rong Si is a fancy restaurant overlooking the pier at Lhong 1919. We sampled the Som Tam with Soft Shell crab. It was spicier than we expected it to be, but the soft shell crab was to die for. Oh, and the Roselle juice was a fruity delight. Ask more deets from @amrutamalkar.
You can find Mango Sticky Rice everywhere in Bangkok. Interestingly, we had our first taste of the sticky rice on our last day in the city. And to top it off, it was at Let's Relax spa. Man, this was divine. The sweetened rice & mango was a surprisingly great combo.
You must, must, must sample the Hokkaido Cheese Toast stuffed with grilled cheese from Say Chizu at Siam Square One. Fun fact: this is one of the most Instagrammed toast in the world thanks to its stretchy, gooey cheesy filling. This unicorn-flavoured toast was a pure delight.
Next up is Mihimihi in Siam Square One, again. Now, this is probably not a product of Bangkok but to find such incredible French puff in the city deserved a mention. The thin crust with a pillowy soft cream filling inside are what dreams are made of.
Honestly, the one dish I was looking forward to the most was the Pad Thai. And, I was supremely disappointed with its sweet flavour. You can try these glass noodles with shrimp if you like, but it is definitely not my scene. I hear good things about Thip Samai and Jay Fai.
Sometimes, walking on the street can reveal gems like this Coffee Station at the the Bangkok Area Revenue Centre in Sukhumvit. This place was a stone's throw away from Salil Hotel on Soi 11. I used to get a couple of Mochas for us everyday. It was that good, yes.
The old-fashioned @ChaTraMue known for its traditional Thai Tea apparently got a shot in the arm after the Rose Tea was introduced in 2017. I had the Cocoa Latte and @amrutamalkar had the Butterfly Pea Iced Tea. Don't even have to say this: super refreshing!
After visiting Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), make it a point to visit The Sixth. This hole in the wall place is a Thai bistro worth all the hype. We had the Tom Yum Goong with Jasmine rice and Shrimp cakes.
The spicy Tom Yum soup with Enoki Mushrooms and Big river prawns was so damn flavourful! Tip: break the shrimp cakes and dunk the pieces in the soup. We are definitely going back to The Sixth for sure. Note that the lines can get really long during lunch.
Saving the best for last: Daniel Thaiger's burger. Started by an American expat at the once ebullient Soi 38, this place on Soi 11 is a must visit. The Angus Beef mince patty. The slices of Cheddar Cheese. The softest buns. The special sauce. This burger is out of the world!
Thank you, Bangkok. I am definitely coming back for more food, if not for anything else. Repeat after me: Thai food is best food.
