Trudeau's going with 'jobs, jobs, jobs' as his defence in Lavscam because it's all he has. Here are the problems with it:
(1) The Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act says in determining the granting of a deferred prosecution agreement, job loss is not be considered:
To wit: "(T)he prosecutor must not consider the national economic interest, the potential effect on relations with a state other than Canada. or the identity of the organization or individual involved."
(2) The Trudeau government never did any study to independently confirm that jobs would in fact be lost if SNC-Lavalin was convicted of fraud and corruption under the law. It says it relied on the company's warning there would be job losses/
(3) SNC-Lavalin said it never used the threat there could be job losses as a result of the criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin:
SNC-Lavalin now says its CEO never issued threats over jobs globalnews.ca/news/5095424/s…
(4) SNC-Lavalin did say granting the DPA was the best way to project 9,000 SNC-Lavalin jobs -- they key phrase being "SNC-Lavalin jobs." Even if those jobs disappeared for those employees. many would have been hired by other companies as they took over the work from SNC-Lavalin.
Thus Trudeau's argument that he was only trying to save jobs as any good prime minister and MP would -- which he will repeat throughout the federal campaign because it's all he's got -- is at best, highly suspect.
What appears far more likely is that Trudeau lobbied his Attorney General so fiercely & persistently to overturn her Director of Public Prosecutions' independent decision to proceed with the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin, is that he saw it as politically advantageous for himself
